There are many traditions in Indonesia one of them is celebrating birthday. It usually celebrate by having fun or make a party and invite all your friends and relatives. The question is whether in Islam ever taught to celebrate the birthday? Many disagreements about this birthday celebration but some agree to celebrate birthdays.
  • Disagree opinion

Some of mufti forbid birthday celebrations, they berijtihad from general postulates. For example, the arguments that forbid Muslims to imitate the deeds of non-Muslims. As the Prophet said:
“Who resembles a people, then including part of them”
Mufti consider that the birthday celebration is the behavior of non-Muslims. So they forbid Muslims to celebrate it. In addition, birthday party also do by many disobedience such as liquor, music party, dance, mix men and women. Even many of them leaving prayers and other obligations. It also forget the main intentions, replaced with the spirit of wanting to show off and accentuate the wealth.
  • Agree Opinion

Some of muftis tend to allow birthday. The foundation is that birthday is not ritual worship. So long as there is no prohibition that is directly mentioned in the Quran or  Sunnah, the law of origin is allowed. In clearly, as long as there is no texts that strictly prohibit it.
The reason for imitation of non-Muslims, answered with the argument that not all that done by non-Muslims are forbidden to do. Only related to worship is forbidden, as for muamalah, as long as there is no texts that directly forbid it, the law is okay if there happens to be similarity.
The Muftis of this group tend to define 'illat haram imitation of non-Muslims based on the point of its prohibition. Not solely done by them. For example, the habit of non-Muslims giving ritual offerings to mountains that want to erupt, then it in  the law is forbidden for muslims to do.
Whereas if there is a direct texts from Rasulullah SAW not to imitate a certain deed, it is obligatory for every Muslim to follow his orders. For example, the Prophet's prohibit muslims to shave beard and keep a mustache, because it is considered to resemble a non-muslim. So the ban remained in force, although non-muslims themselves have changed their habits.
  • Some Considerations

If we want to lay down the law to celebrate birthdays, we must address the purpose and benefits to be gained.
First, Is any of the goals to be achieved is something important in life?  Or just a waste of money? Or just follow the tradition?
Secondly, what is the benefit of such an event? Is there anything that adds to faith, science and charity? Or add benefits either privately, socially or otherwise?
The third, is there in the conduct of such an event the sinners and sins are violated?
Fourthly, if all above points are positive, and such an event is a tradition, will it not be misunderstood in the next generation as if an event like this has to be done? This is like what happened at the ceremony of the big Islamic day remembrance of the birth, isra` mi`raj and so on.
Do not let in the future, our generation considers birthday celebration is something that must be done. If so, have we not lost meaning, right.
